Competitive sandcastle sculpting has a rulebook. 120 pages.

I stumbled on a pro sand sculpting competition in Virginia Beach last weekend. Turns out there's a whole rulebook, 120 pages long, that covers everything from sand density to tool bans. They can't use binders or internal supports, just water and sand. One guy told me he practiced 300 hours for a 5 day event. The prize money for first place was $15,000. Anyone else know a hobby that's that crazy serious underneath? I never thought sand could have so many rules.

Man, I gotta say I see it completely different. A 120 page rulebook sounds more like a barrier to entry than a sign of real passion, and it just makes the whole thing feel like a lawyer's picnic instead of an art form. If you're dumping 300 hours into stacking wet sand for a shot at 15 grand, that's not a hobby, that's a side job with extra steps, and the fun probably evaporates the second someone pulls out a moisture meter. Real dedication is spending all weekend building something that washes away with the tide and smiling about it, not memorizing regulations just to win a trophy.
