Watched a guy at the Fort Worth garden show water his fern with soda, and now I'm second guessing everything
Went to the Fort Worth botanical garden show about 3 weeks ago and saw a vendor pouring Dr Pepper into a Boston fern. I thought it was a joke until he said the sugar feeds soil microbes and the acid helps with iron uptake. He claimed he's been doing it once a month for 6 years and said "the plant tells you when it's thirsty." I tried it on one of my two ferns at home and the treated one actually looks greener after 2 weeks. Now I'm worried I'm about to kill a plant I've kept alive for 4 years. Has anyone else heard of this or am I falling for some vendor trick?
Sugar water is basically junk food for plants, it might green things up short term but you're feeding fungus and gnats way more than the fern. That vendor probably sells new ferns every spring to people who try his trick.
