My basil patch got wiped out by aphids in 48 hours flat

I planted 14 basil seedlings last Tuesday in my backyard bed in Austin, checked them Wednesday evening and they looked fine, then by Friday morning every single leaf was curled up and sticky with sap. I sprayed a neem oil mix I had on hand but it was too late, the whole row was done. Turns out I ignored the ant trails marching up the stems for a week, my neighbor said they were the warning sign. Has anyone else lost a whole herb bed this fast, or did I just get unlucky with the timing?
