I finally stopped watering my succulents every week like a lunatic

For two years I killed every succulent I bought. My friend who runs a nursery in Tucson told me most people drown their succulents and I was doing it every 7 days like clockwork. Turns out they only need water once every 3 or 4 weeks depending on the pot size. Has anyone else been overwatering their plants this whole time without realizing it?

My friend's grandma has been watering her succulents every Sunday for 40 years and they're taking over her whole yard. I think people get way too worried about this stuff. Sure if you're drowning them in a pot with no drainage holes that's a problem. But a little extra water once in a while probably won't kill them if you have the right soil and a sunny spot. Have you noticed any difference since you cut back?

Wait, hold on - did you say 40 years?! That's wild, I can't even keep a succulent alive for 40 days without second-guessing myself! I swear I've read a dozen articles that make it sound like one drop too much and they'll rot instantly. But your grandma's yard is basically a testament that plants are tougher than we give them credit for. Honestly, it makes me wonder how much of the conventional wisdom is just overthinking it. Maybe I should just back off and let my succulents figure it out like hers did.
