Emergency fern rescue: the ice cube trick that saved my kitchen plant

My Boston fern in the Denver sunroom was turning brown at the tips no matter what I did. I tried misting, moving it, even a pebble tray for three weeks straight. Last Saturday I read about placing two ice cubes on the soil every other day instead of pouring water. The slow melt keeps the roots from getting shocked, and the humidity stays steady around the crown. It's been nine days and the new fronds are coming in green, not crispy. Has anyone else had luck with this on tougher ferns, or am I just delaying the inevitable?
