The Count of Monte Cristo book vs. the 2002 movie, what a letdown

I finally read the book last month after watching that movie years ago, and I honestly can't believe how much they cut. They removed the entire escape sequence with the other prisoners and turned a 1000 page revenge story into a 2 hour action flick. Has anyone else read a book after seeing the adaptation first and felt completely robbed of the real story?

Friend read it first and spent the whole movie whispering "that's not what happened" at the screen.
