Went from hating book club to loving it after we banned plot summaries

Our group in Portland spent 4 months just recapping chapters, and every debate died at the surface. Then one member, Sarah, put a rule on the table: no one can mention what happened, only why it made them feel something. The next meeting on The Road got heated over whether the father's choice was selfish or merciful, and we went 90 minutes past our stop time. That switch flipped how we all read, and now we even argue about the author's intent versus our own baggage. Has anyone else tried structural rules like this, or do you think banning summary just kills the point for slower readers?
