TIL my book club was debating the wrong thing about unreliable narrators

My group spent 3 hours arguing if The Girl on the Train's narrator was just forgetful or actually lying. Then someone brought up a 2016 article from The Guardian about narrative bias in thrillers. Totally shifted how I see the whole genre. Anyone else have a debate get flipped by outside research?

3 hours arguing if she was forgetful or lying" Man that is HILARIOUS. My book club once spent a whole night fighting over whether the narrator in Gone Girl was actually crazy or just messing with everyone. Then I looked up a breakdown online and realized the whole point of the book is that BOTH things can be true at once. Feel like that kinda kills the fun of arguing sometimes when you find out you're both wrong and right. But hey at least you guys moved on to a better debate instead of spinning your wheels forever. Guess that's just what happens when you actually fact check the literature instead of just getting heated about nothing.

@parker_jones50 you nailed it with the both-wrong-and-right thing.
