The night my book club almost fell apart over a single chapter

I was hosting our monthly book club at my place in Austin last Tuesday and we got stuck debating chapter 7 of *The Vanishing Half* for 45 minutes. Half the group thought the twin switch was obvious, the other half missed it completely because they skimmed. I had to pull up the page on my phone and read the key sentence out loud to settle things, and now we have a new rule about bringing page markers.

Yeah I actually just finished The Vanishing Half last week and totally felt that chapter 7 thing. I had to flip back like three times cause I thought I missed something, but nope the book just drops that twist really subtle like.

Know what, I had almost the exact same reaction. That moment felt like the author just trusted me to figure it out without hand holding, which I actually kind of appreciated once I calmed down. Glad I wasn't the only one flipping back through pages like wait what.
