Question about the stranger at the laundromat who called my favorite book overrated
I was folding socks at the Spin City on 5th last Tuesday when a woman next to me saw the book sticking out of my bag and said, 'I don't get why everyone loves that one. The middle drags.' It hit different because our club picked it as the monthly read and I was the one who pushed for it. I asked what she'd swap it with and she named a short story collection from 1987 I'd never heard of. We ended up talking for 20 minutes about whether a slow middle can be the whole point of a book. Now I'm torn because half our group defends the pacing and half wants to drop it from the list. She wasn't even in a book club, just a person with strong thoughts about a novel I'd been defending for 3 weeks. Have any of you ever had a random chat change how you argue for a pick at your next meeting?
