Our club read 'The Road' and 'Station Eleven' back to back and the second one just hit different

The first felt like a slog, but the second had characters I actually cared about, which made the whole post-apocalyptic theme work. What's a book that totally changed your mind about a genre?

Neuromancer made me finally get why people love cyberpunk.

I used to avoid fantasy books because I thought they were all silly elves and boring quests. Then a friend made me read "The Fifth Season" by N.K. Jemisin. The world building was so smart and the characters felt painfully real. It completely flipped my view of what the genre could do. Now I seek out fantasy that uses its setting to explore big, human ideas.
