Clifford the Big Red Dog ruined our book club vote

We spent 20 minutes at Linda's house arguing whether Clifford's size made him a metaphor for capitalism or just a big dog. Someone quoted the book like it was scripture. I said he's a dog who fits the couch, that's it. Now half the group won't talk to me and we're splitting into two clubs over it. Has anyone else had a kids' book cause this much of a fight?
