That old foreman told me to run my leads at 60 amps on a 1/4 inch plate, I thought he was nuts but it laid in like butter.
I tried his way on a job site in Gary last Tuesday and the weld penetration was perfect, no spatter, has anyone else had a vet teach them something that felt totally backwards?

Whoa, that's wild. I actually just read an article from some old welding forum that talked about how back in the day, guys ran everything way hotter than the modern charts say. They claimed the old school Lincoln manuals from the 70s had settings that look crazy now, but they swear by it for deeper penetration on thicker stuff. Maybe it's just a different way of thinking, like they figured out what works through trial and error instead of following a book. I've heard a few old timers say the same thing about running higher amps than you'd think, and they always say the bead comes out smooth as glass. It makes you wonder how much we overthink things with all these precise settings today.

Oh yeah, totally! I tried it once on some 3/8 plate and couldn't believe how clean it ran.
