Rant: a helper on the job site told me my tube rolling was 'close enough' and I've been chewing on it since
Last Thursday at a plant outside Gary, Indiana, I was finishing up a bank of tubes on a small water tube boiler. One of the guys helping me looked at the rolled ends, shrugged, and said 'close enough, it'll hold.' Thing is, he wasn't trying to be lazy. He honestly figured that was the standard. That got to me more than if he'd just been sloppy. My dad ran a tube roller for 30 years and he drilled it into me that you don't guess, you measure. A rolled joint is either in spec or it isn't, and a leak shows up when the thing is hot and under pressure, not when it's convenient for you. So now I check every single one with a gauge and I log the numbers, even when the crew gives me grief for being slow. How many of you have run into younger hands who think 'close enough' is fine, and what did you do to set them straight?
