Old foreman in Gary told me to trust the bevel, not the tape measure

He swore my gaps were closing up because I kept fighting a warped shell plate with a tape that didn't match the radius. Took me 20 minutes to reset the bevel gauge off the shop template and suddenly everything lined up better than before. Any of you guys run into fit-up issues that only make sense after you stop measuring and start looking?
