I called a mud drum handhole gasket "good enough" for 9 years, a guy in Baton Rouge set me straight
I used to just wire brush the seat, slap the gasket in, and torque it down. Last week on a 60,000 lb/hr unit in Baton Rouge a retired guy named Ray watched me do it and asked why I skipped the blueing check. He had me coat the seat with Prussian blue, set the gasket, and lift it back off. The contact patch was maybe 40 percent, all on one side. He said that is why I kept chasing weeps after every hydro. Now I blue every handhole seat before it goes back on. Anybody else doing a contact check or am I late to this?
Forty percent contact and all on one side is wild, that thing was never going to seal no matter how hard you cranked on it. Nobody ever taught me to blue a handhole seat either, I just did the same wire brush and send it deal for years until a guy showed me the same trick. Now I keep a tube in my bucket and check every one before it goes back on, saves a ton of grief on hydro day.
