Got called out for my sloppy weld prep by a foreman in Toledo

He told me my bevels looked like a beaver chewed them, and that a bad prep guarantees a bad weld. Now I spend an extra 10 minutes with the grinder before I even strike an arc. Anyone else have a simple step they used to rush through?

Know exactly what you mean. I got a similar talk years ago about cleaning my base metal. I used to think a quick wipe was enough if it looked clean to me. Learned the hard way that even a little oil or rust will ruin your day. That extra minute with the cleaner and a fresh rag saves so many headaches later. It feels like a waste of time until you see the difference it makes.

What kind of cleaner do you find works best for that final wipe? I've tried a few and some leave a film that's almost worse than the oil. I switched to the pure acetone from the hardware store and it's been a game changer for me. It evaporates so fast and doesn't leave any residue behind.
