My first try with a coal forge gave me a weird, glassy slag on the metal.
I was working on a simple leaf keychain and the surface came out looking like it had a weird, shiny skin. I think my fire was too deep and I let the piece sit in the reducing zone for too long. Anyone know how to fix this for next time?

Check your fire depth and keep the work moving. That glassy slag is scale fusing back onto the steel from too much time in the reducing zone. A shallower, wider fire gives you better control.

Actually, that glassy look is more likely from silica in the fuel or refractory lining (it's a flux). Still, your fire advice is spot on for control.
