Hit 500 hand forged bottle openers last week and I still don't know if that means I'm good or just stubborn
Counted up my finished pieces last Tuesday in my garage in Fort Wayne and the number came out to 503 bottle openers since I lit my first fire two years ago. Half the folks at my local group say that many reps means my hammer control is dialed in and I should raise my prices, but the other half say I should have moved on to tongs and knives after the first 50 instead of grinding out the same twist. I can feel the difference in my strikes, but I also wonder if I just got fast at one thing instead of getting good at the craft. Where do you all draw the line between putting in reps and branching out, and did anyone else get stuck on one item way longer than they planned?
That bit about "fast at one thing instead of good at the craft" hits home. I read an old post from a blacksmith who said he did nothing but hooks for a year and called it his grad school, because by the end he could feel the metal move before he hit it. Two years of openers gave you a skill most folks quit before they get, so maybe the move is one new thing a month and keep the openers for fun money.
