Finally figured out my forge welding issue after 6 months

Turns out I was using way too much flux and cleaning the scale too often. A guy at the Oregon guild meetup watched me for 2 minutes and just said "stop scrubbing so much." Has anyone else had a simple fix like that change their whole workflow?

I read somewhere that forge welding is mostly about letting the metal do the work and not fussing with it too much. Kinda makes sense now reading your post, the dude at the meetup nailed it lol.

Hold up... "nailed it"? That guy at the meetup actually got the forge weld to stick first try in front of everyone? I still can't believe he did that with just a borrowed hammer and some mystery steel from the scrap pile. Man I was there trying not to breathe too hard near the anvil and he just... flows with it like it's nothing.
