A farrier in Abilene told me my forge was running too cold and it cost me 3 weeks of work
I had been fighting the same problem for 3 straight weeks, every punch drifted and every drift came out crooked on a run of 12 bottle openers. A farrier from Abilene watched me work for maybe 90 seconds and asked what color I thought my steel was. I argued with him for a bit, then he pulled a magnet out of his truck, stuck it on my billet, and it grabbed hard. That magnet test showed me my "orange" was really a dull red, so I bumped my burner and fixed my airflow, and the next 12 came out straight as a string. Now I check with a magnet every time before I start forging. What do y'all use to judge heat when the shop lights are washing out the color?
