Dropped $60 on a streaming service I barely touch

I signed up for this niche horror streaming service called Shudder last month because I was in the mood for creepy movies. Watched maybe three films in two weeks and then forgot about it until the charge hit my card again. I know it's my own fault for not canceling, but does anyone else have a subscription they keep meaning to ditch but never get around to?

My neighbor two doors down has three different meal kit subscriptions she signed up for during lockdowns and still gets boxes from two of them every week even though she eats out most nights. I think it's part of this bigger thing where we sign up for stuff thinking it'll change our habits, but really we just end up paying for the idea of ourselves that we wish we were. In your case it was horror movie nights, in mine it was a meditation app I used exactly once. It's almost like we're donating to the possibility of a different routine.

You hit on something real there. I bought a bread machine during the first lockdown. I was going to be that person who made fresh loaves every morning, the whole house smelling like a bakery. That machine sat on my counter for three years before I finally admitted to myself I wasn't going to use it and gave it away. It's like we're all just throwing money at this fantasy version of ourselves that never actually shows up. We buy the gear, we sign up for the service, and then we go back to our old habits while the subscription keeps charging away. It's a weird kind of comfort, isn't it, just having the option there even when we know we won't take it.
