Vent: my uncle said don't quit the stable job for the startup, and 2 years later I'm kicking myself
My uncle sat me down at a family dinner in Columbus two years ago and said I was crazy to leave my $58,000 job with full benefits to join a 6 person startup. He pushed hard for me to stay, said the safe move always wins, and I listened to him. The startup I turned down got bought out 14 months later and the two guys who took the roles I passed on walked away with about $120,000 each in stock. My old company did a round of layoffs last spring anyway, so the whole safe bet thing fell apart on its own. Now I'm job hunting in a worse market and my uncle keeps saying he was just looking out for me. Has anyone else blown a big chance because a family member talked them out of it?
