Why is everyone painting over peeling trim without scraping first
Watched my neighbor slap two coats straight onto flaking baseboards last Saturday and then act shocked when it bubbled... I've saved myself 3 repaint jobs in my 1970s ranch by just spending 20 minutes with a putty knife first. Has anyone else seen this shortcut backfire or am I the only one who thinks prep is non-negotiable?

My cousin did the same thing on his porch rails last spring and then wondered why the paint peeled off in sheets by August. It's like people treat prep work as optional because the payoff is invisible, same way folks skip rotating tires or cleaning their dryer vent. Nobody sees the 20 minutes you spent scraping, but everybody sees the bubbles and cracks six months later. I think shortcuts feel like time saved in the moment, but they always cost double later, whether it's paint, car maintenance, or even just letting dishes pile up past midnight. Prep is the boring part of everything, and boring is exactly why people skip it.
