Warning: I paid $340 for a countertop steam cleaner and it nearly wrecked my kitchen cabinets
Two years back I got talked into buying one of those fancy steam cleaners at a home show in Milwaukee, $340 out the door, and the guy swore it would replace half the stuff under my sink. First week it worked great on the stovetop and the hood filter, so I got brave and hit the cabinet fronts with it. Bad idea. The steam got under the finish on the lower doors and by the next morning the veneer was lifting in three places, and the wood swelled up around the hinges. I spent two weekends sanding and re-staining to hide it, not to mention the money for new hardware and a can of poly. What really got me was the cleaner didn't even save time, since I still had to wipe everything down after the steam. If you're eyeing one of these, keep it away from any wood or veneer and stick to tile, grout, and metal. Has anybody found a steam gizmo that's actually safe on painted cabinets, or is that just a lost cause?
