Tried to peel ginger with a spoon after a knife incident and honestly it's better

Dropped my chef knife on the floor last Tuesday at 6am in my tiny apartment kitchen. Was too tired to wash and sharpen it so I grabbed a regular spoon from the drawer. Scraped off the ginger skin in like 30 seconds flat with barely any waste. The spoon got into all the nooks way cleaner than my knife ever did. Now I'm questioning if I even need a knife for ginger. Anyone else ditch their peeler or knife for this?

Totally agree with you on this one. It's actually part of a bigger thing I've noticed: we overthink kitchen tools way too much. Like, I used to think you needed a special peeler for everything, but a spoon works for ginger, a butter knife opens stubborn jars, and a paper towel handles greasy messes better than any sponge. People get so hung up on having the "right" gadget when the best tool is whatever gets the job done with less fuss. You found a trick that saves time and frustration, and that's what matters in the end. Stick with the spoon and don't look back.

Hold up, I gotta push back on this a bit. A spoon works okay for ginger if it's super fresh, but try that with older, fibery ginger and you'll be scraping for five minutes while the knife just slices through. Plus every time I've tried the spoon trick I end up losing more ginger flesh than I'd like, just shaving off chunks instead of the thin peel. Knife is still king for precision and speed, especially when you're prepping a big batch of stir fry.
