Appreciation post: the $3 bench scraper finally beat my $40 knife for moving chopped onion
For years I scooped diced onion off the board with my chef's knife, then last month my sister in Boise handed me a bench scraper and I switched for good. It took 10 seconds instead of a minute, and nothing landed on the floor. What's your go-to tool for getting stuff from board to pan?
A bench scraper costs three dollars and a chef's knife costs forty, but the knife also cuts the onion in the first place so it is doing two jobs. My brother in law has been cooking for 20 years and he still uses his knife to scoop and yeah some onion ends up on the floor but he just picks it up. Ten seconds versus a minute sounds made up unless you were scooping one piece at a time. How much onion are we talking about here, a whole bag or one onion for a single dinner. Getting a tool that does one small thing better is fine but calling it a win over a knife feels like a stretch when the knife already did the hard part.
