A fader at my shop in Denver switched to clipper-over-comb for every blend
I watched him do a full skin taper on a guy last Saturday using only clipper-over-comb and a trimmer for the outline. He didn't touch a guard once. The blend was super smooth and took him maybe 20 minutes less than my usual method with guards. I've been trying it on my last 3 clients and the results are hit or miss. Anyone else here ditch guards entirely or am I missing something about when to use this technique?

The thing nobody's talking about is how clipper over comb changes your whole stance and movement around the chair. You end up using your non-dominant hand way more for tension and comb placement, which can throw off your rhythm if you're not used to it. @anna567 mentioned using the 1.5 guard for the initial guideline, and that makes sense because the comb can't give you that same visual starting point. Another point - clipper over comb works great on some hair textures but falls apart on coarse or curly hair where the comb can't cut through clean. Have you noticed whether your hit or miss results line up with different hair types?

The first time I saw my coworker do it with just clippers and a comb I thought he was nuts. I was sure guards were the only way to get a clean blend. But after watching him knock out a skin fade in under 30 minutes I gave it a real shot. Now I use clipper-over-comb for the bulk of my tapers but I still grab a #1.5 guard for the initial guideline, it helps me keep things consistent. You finding it hit or miss too?
