The $4 oven thermometer that schooled my kitchen habits

I fought with cake domes and raw centers for about 6 months, blamed my oven's age and my measuring. Turns out the dial was off by 25 degrees in my 1990s GE range in Columbus. A cheap probe thermometer from Kroger showed me the truth. Anyone else run through recipe troubleshooting before checking their actual bake temp?

Blame the cheap fix before the fancy one every time, that's a rule I've seen hold up in almost everything. My buddy spent weeks tweaking his espresso shots before realizing the grinder was set wrong, same kind of blind spot. We just assume the tool we trust is honest when it's usually the first thing lying to us.
