Watched 'The Core' and 'Armageddon' back to back last night

We did a double feature of two disaster movies about saving Earth, and 'The Core' is just on another level of bad but fun. The science in 'Armageddon' is silly, but 'The Core' has them piloting a ship made of 'unobtainium' through magma. The scene where the guy fixes a computer with a pocket knife had me laughing for a solid five minutes. It's the kind of movie where you just have to turn your brain off and enjoy the ride. What's your favorite 'so bad it's good' disaster flick?

Gotta admit, I never understood the big deal about turning your brain off for a movie. If the science is that broken, it just takes me out of it completely. The pocket knife fixing a super computer thing is a perfect example. It stops being fun and just feels lazy. Maybe I'm just no good at enjoying those kinds of flicks.

Totally get where mark_smith59 is coming from. I read this article once about "competence porn" in movies, where the fun is watching smart people do smart things right. When a movie shows a hacker just mashing a keyboard or uses a "zoom and enhance" on a blurry photo, it feels like they don't respect the audience. It's not about being a science expert, it's about the movie trying at least a little. That pocket knife fixing a super computer is just the writers giving up.
