My string lights tangled disaster last Saturday, still not over it

We had a small party Saturday and I decided to finally hang the 200-foot string lights I bought back in July. Spent 3 hours untangling them, half the bulbs ended up dead, and one section fell down right as guests arrived. Has anyone found a decent way to store these things so they don't turn into a knot factory?

My buddy Mike wrapped his around a cardboard box and it still took him an hour to undo.
