My neighbor's hack for a swampy corner of the yard actually worked

Had a spot that stayed soggy for days after every rain, making it useless. He told me to dig a small trench and fill it with gravel, then cover it with sod, and it drained in under an hour last storm. Anyone have a better fix for poor drainage without installing a full French drain?
