My neighbor swears raised beds are the only way, but my in-ground plot in Tulsa has been crushing his for 2 seasons
He built four $150 cedar boxes while I just mixed compost into my clay dirt with a $20 shovel, and by August my tomatoes were taller than his fence. Last weekend he asked what my secret was and I pointed at the ground, which he refuses to believe is the answer. Anyone else had luck ditching the fancy beds and just fixing the soil you already have?
That $20 shovel and compost mix sounds about right, but I'm curious how deep you worked it into that Tulsa clay. Did you break up the hardpan underneath or just till the top few inches and let the worms do the rest? I ask because my in-ground plot sank like a rock until I went deep with a broadfork, and now I'm wondering if the depth is the real trick nobody talks about.
