A guy at the nursery in Boise sold me on raised beds and my tomatoes doubled, but my peppers hated it
Three seasons ago I was buying starters at a nursery on Orchard Street and the guy working there talked me into building four 4x4 cedar raised beds filled with a 50/50 mix of topsoil and compost. He swore it would fix my clay ground and it did for tomatoes. I got 42 pounds of fruit off six plants that summer, which was double what my old in-ground rows gave me. But the same beds cooked my bell peppers, the soil hit 95 degrees by mid-July and half the plants dropped their flowers. So now I'm stuck arguing with myself about whether raised beds are the fix or the problem, since it depends on what you're growing. Anyone else keep two setups going, one raised and one in the ground, and does the extra watering ever feel worth it?
