Unpopular opinion: I thought the creek crossing on the Eagle Rock loop in Arkansas was overhyped, then it rained 2 inches overnight
Everyone online said the 3 water crossings on that 12 mile stretch were no big deal, so I wore my old trail runners and didn't bother with a dry bag. Around mile 7 the water was up past my knees and moving fast enough that I had to shuffle sideways with my trekking poles to stay upright. My left shoe got sucked off my foot for a second and I said out loud, to nobody, "well that's gone." I ended up crossing one handed while holding my shoe in the other and laughing like an idiot, and my buddy got the whole thing on video. Has anyone else had a route that was fine at low water turn into a totally different hike after one storm, or do I just pick bad days?
Two inches in one night is basically a whole different trail, and that 12 mile stretch around Eagle Rock goes from a stroll to a serious swim in about six hours. I've seen the same thing on a road trip where a "mild" creek ford near my parents' place in Missouri was ankle deep in July and chest deep after a storm, and it's the same lesson every time: water is the one thing you can't judge from a trip report. That's the pattern I keep running into, in hikes and in life, the version of something you read about and the version you actually get can be worlds apart based on timing. You didn't pick a bad day, you just showed up after the trail got a rewrite.
