Question about permits for a Sierra Nevada backpacking route

I just finished planning a week-long loop in the Sierra Nevadas. It's a big step for me, but now I see I need overnight permits. How do you apply for these without messing up the dates?

Just wing it and adjust dates later.

Yeah that reminds me of my friend who tried to "just wing" booking a whole vacation week. He told his boss the wrong dates by accident, then had to scramble when the flights didn't match up. It turned into this whole mess with HR because he'd already put in the official time off request. They were not happy about him changing it after the fact. Sometimes a little planning saves you a big headache later.

Come on, how big of a deal can it really be? So he mixed up the dates and had to fix it, HR deals with way worse stuff every single day. It's not like he just didn't show up for work. People act like changing a time-off request is some huge crime, but it's just a simple admin fix. Making it sound like a disaster is kinda over the top.
