Just found out the Appalachian Trail has over 250 shelters and I thought it was way less
I was reading thru the ATC guide last night and saw that number, blew my mind since I always figured there were maybe 100 scattered along the whole 2,190 miles, has anyone else been surprised by how well set up that trail actually is?

The 250 figure really surprised me too because I used to think the trail was more rough and wild than that. My buddy thru-hiked in 2019 and he told me about all these shelters spaced out every 8 to 10 miles on average. I figured it was mostly just camping under the stars with a few random lean-tos here and there. But after he showed me his maps and the shelter locations I realized how much planning went into making that trail accessible for people. It really changed my view on how organized the whole system is.

Respectfully, I see it a little different. The shelters are there, sure, but they fill up fast and a lot of them are pretty rough shape. I did a section hike last summer and passed three that had busted roofs or were overrun with mice. The spacing matters less when you show up at mile 12 and the next shelter is too full to squeeze in. The trail's organized on paper, but the reality on the ground can still feel wild and unpredictable.
