Gated content used to drive me crazy - now I see the point

I fought against gated whitepapers for years. Felt like we were just hoarding emails. Then last quarter I tracked a lead that came from a gated case study. That one download turned into a $12k deal. Has anyone else flipped on this or am I just getting soft in my old age?

Buddy of mine swore he'd never gate anything until one download paid for his whole year.
