Appreciation post: That time a busted belt turned into the best ride of the year

I was ready to call it a day when my belt shredded 15 miles from the truck near Island Park... but a guy on an old Polaris stopped, gave me his spare, and showed me a trail back through the meadows I never knew existed. Anyone else have a breakdown that accidentally led to a great discovery?

My chain popped off on a forest service road near Stanley, Idaho, about 20 miles from the nearest paved anything. I was sitting there feeling pretty stupid when this old timer on a four-wheeler came by, fixed it with a master link from his kit, and then pointed me up a game trail that led to the most amazing overlook of the Sawtooths. I never would have found that spot on my own.

My belt snapped on a logging road near McCall last spring. I was about to start the long walk out when a couple on a side-by-side rolled up, handed me a zip tie, and then insisted I follow them to this hidden hot spring. The zip tie barely held, but that soak was worth the panic. Sometimes the machine gods just decide you need a better view.

That "zip tie barely held" part is so real. I had a belt go on a trail near Lowman once. I was using a piece of parachute cord as a temp fix when a group on horses came through. One of them had a proper spare belt that fit. They told me to cut up past the clear cut, and it opened up to this whole hidden valley with a creek. I'd ridden right past that turnoff for years.
