My old camera finally got a shot of the Milky Way core
I've been trying for two years with my basic DSLR and a cheap tripod. Last weekend at a dark sky site in Oregon, I took 50 shots at 20 seconds each. Stacking them in free software, I could actually see the dust lanes. Has anyone else had a cheap setup work better than they thought?

Two years for a blurry space picture seems like a lot of effort.

I mean, @the_james, that blurry picture is a huge deal though. It's not just a photo, it's us seeing a black hole for the first time ever. That takes a global team of telescopes working together like one giant dish. The data they had to sort through was insane, like shipping half a ton of hard drives by plane. So two years to make that image from all that noise? Honestly seems pretty fast for making history.
