Showerthought: why do we all just accept that gift cards expire?
I found a $50 gift card to a bookstore in my glove box on Saturday while I was digging for my insurance card. I got it as a birthday gift from my sister in 2021, and the back says it expired 18 months after purchase. That seems crazy to me, because the store already has the money. I called the store and they said they can sometimes reload it but only if I have the original receipt, which of course I don't. So now I'm out $50 for no real reason other than a date printed on plastic. Does anyone know if there's a law that stops companies from doing this, or is it just something we all shrug at?
