Night nurse said count to 10 before answering, she was right

An older ER nurse told me that trick on a 3 a.m. shift and it stopped me from snapping at half my patients. Has anyone else tried pausing before responding in a heated moment? Does it actually work outside of work?

You ever try counting to ten with a dog that's barking nonstop at the vacuum cleaner? Doesn't really work, they just keep going. But yeah, that pause trick helped me with a customer who was furious about a groom that came out patchy. I counted, took a breath, and realized she was actually upset because her dog had mats and we had to shave them off. We talked it out and she left happy. The counting gives your brain time to see the other side, even if it feels weird standing there silent for a few seconds.
