Watched a crew butcher a 60 year old silver maple in Dayton 3 weeks ago and I finally get why we charge what we charge
Three weeks ago I got called out to a property in Dayton to look at a silver maple the owner said was 'getting too big.' When I pulled up, a truck from a lawn company was already there and two guys were hacking away at the root flare with a chainsaw. I tried to explain that you can't just cut roots on a 60 year old tree and expect it to survive, but the owner said they quoted him $400 and I was at $1,800. Fast forward to now and the tree is already dropping leaves in the wrong season and leaning about 15 degrees toward his garage, so he called me back. I'm not trying to say I told you so, but has anyone else had luck getting homeowners to understand the price gap before the damage shows up?
Man that is a rough spot to be in, watching it happen and knowing exactly how it ends. Homeowners hear a number and compare it to the other number without seeing that one crew is removing a tree and the other is trying to keep it alive. Best you can do is put your findings in writing with photos so the next guy who shows up sees the history.
