Vent: spent 3 hours chasing a 'disease' in a red oak that turned out to be a lawn mower
Had a call out in Beaverton last Tuesday about a red oak dropping leaves all summer, and I was sure it was bacterial leaf scorch going in. Pulled soil samples, checked the moisture at three depths, even sent photos to a pathologist friend in Corvallis who owes me a favor. Turned out the guy's teenage kid had been weed whacking the trunk every other weekend and the bark was chewed up 8 inches up from the soil line, so the tree was stressed and dropping leaves. I felt pretty dumb standing there with my probe in hand looking at the wound. Charged him for the visit and gave him a free lesson on mulch rings instead. Any of you got a go-to line when you have to tell a client their own family is the problem? I could use a better one.
