Just realized crown thinning isn't just for looks
I always thought thinning tree crowns was mostly about making them look nice. But after seeing how much it helped during a windy season, I changed my mind. Trees I thinned last year didn't lose big limbs like the others did. Now I tell all my clients it's worth the extra time. It really keeps trees safer and healthier.

Ever think it was just for looks? I sure did. Took a few snapped branches in my own yard to prove my dumb self wrong.

Same here, learned my lesson with a young maple tree. I watered it wrong for a whole season, figured it was fine because the leaves looked okay. Then one good storm and it split right down the middle. @mark_smith59, that feeling of realizing you caused the problem is the worst. Now I ask questions before I assume I know what a plant needs. It saves a lot of cleanup and that guilty feeling.

Funny how we only notice the real job of something after it fails. Makes you wonder what other yard work we're doing just for looks.
