DAE realize the 3 inch mulch ring around my trunks was hurting the trees, not helping?
I started mulching at a big property in Fort Worth about 4 months ago, and I went heavy on it, piling maybe 8 inches right up against the bark because it looked clean. A client asked me why her maple looked worse than last season, and I did not have a good answer. I dug down and the bark at the base was soft and dark, so the mulch was holding all that wet right where the trunk needs to breathe. I pulled it back to about 3 inches deep and kept a 2 inch gap off the flare. Nine weeks later the bark on the maple had firmed up and the new growth came in fine. I felt pretty dumb, since this is basic stuff I should have caught sooner. Has anyone else had to go back and undo a mulch volcano they built themselves?
