Cutting a 30 foot dead oak over a shed in Nashville, one ratchet strap saved my whole afternoon
Honestly I was stuck on a dead oak leaning right over a customer's shed in East Nashville last month. The tree had a 14 inch lean and every limb I dropped was rolling toward the roof. I tried a rope and a come along but the wood kept shifting as I cut. Then this old climber named Dale told me to run one ratchet strap around the trunk about 6 feet up and cinch it down tight. That one $18 strap kept the whole spar from kicking sideways while I took it down in 3 foot sections. Finished the job in 4 hours with zero dents in the shed roof. Has anyone else used straps like that on a heavy lean, or am I late to this one?
Man that dead oak over a shed sounds like a nightmare. Glad you got it down safe and no dents on the roof. That one strap trick from Dale is smart, keeps the spar from rolling while you section it out. Four hours on a leaning dead oak is solid work.
