Can we talk about spike trimming on young maples?

Had two clients in Rochester ask me to strip every spike off their 4 year old sugar maples this spring. One swears it pushes faster height, the other says it wrecks the leader and invites rot. I have my own view after 12 seasons, so what is the real deal here?
