Warning: found a fried wire nut in a 2019 build last week, and the copper had turned green in 6 years
Pulled a dryer apart in a house out near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. Built in 2019, so the wiring is barely 6 years old. The wire nut on the neutral had melted down to a little black blob and the copper underneath was bright green, like it sat in a bucket of salt water. Turned out the builder used the small orange nuts on 10 gauge stranded wire. Wrong size, wrong spot, and it cooked itself slow for 6 years until the terminal finally let go. Homeowner said the dryer had been acting weird for about 3 months before it quit. I've done probably 200 service calls in builds under 10 years old this year and this is the 4th one where the wire nut was the whole problem. Pull your wire nuts apart on new construction calls, even the ones that look fine. Anyone else seeing more of this on recent builds or is it just my area?
