Took the cheap multimeter over the fluke for a week, here's what broke

I had a job in a laundry mat off Route 9 and my Fluke was in the shop. Grabbed a $25 unit from the auto parts store to get through. Two days in, I got a false reading on a dryer heating element, replaced a good part, and the customer's machine still threw a code. Third visit, I used an old analog meter and found the real issue in 10 minutes. The cheap meter showed 118V when the line was actually 98V under load. Has anyone else had a budget meter lie to them at the worst possible time, or am I just unlucky?

That false reading bit is brutal. I used to think cheap meters were fine, not anymore.
